Today 16 million slaves are being exploited in the private sector. To combat slavery, the Australian Government has passed legislation to increase corporate responsibility and supply chain transparency. The Australian Modern Slavery Act requires certain companies to report on the steps they have taken to identify, address and prevent modern slavery in their own operations and supply chains. Any organization carrying out business or part of its business in Australia and has an annual turnover of  AUD $100m+ is required to publish a modern slavery statement. Hence, the Australian Modern Slavery Act targets domestic as well as foreign corporations.
