Today 16 million slaves are being exploited in the private sector. To combat slavery several governments, including the UK and Australia, have passed new legislation to increase corporate responsibility and supply chain transparency. The UK Modern Slavery Act and Australian Modern Slavery Act require certain companies to report on the steps they have taken to identify, address and prevent modern slavery in their own operations and supply chains. Any organization carrying out business or part of its business in the UK and/or Australia and that has an annual turnover of £36m (UK) or AUD $100m (AU) is required to publish a modern slavery statement. Hence, the UK Modern Slavery Act and the Australian Modern Slavery Act target domestic as well as foreign corporations.
